ETU launches new Elite Ranking System to bolster European Cups

The European Triathlon Union (ETU) is introducing a new Elite Ranking System for all ITU Triathlon European Cup events and ETU Triathlon European Championships.

The ETU was keen to change the previous ranking system to ensure that the overall pool of prize money was actually paid to the top 10 European athletes during a calendar season (1 Jan – 31 Dec). The pool prize for the new Ranking List for the 2013 season is €25,000 (€12,500 per gender).

Previously the ETU ranking continued to accumulate through the years. At the end the year, whoever was first was not necessarily the best performing athlete of that given season. Although, ETU notes that it will retain this old system under a new title of ETU Points List.

The new ranking criteria can be found via a direct download. It is also available in the downloads section of the ETU website.

The new current rankings for male and female elite triathletes, as of 13 August 2013, can also be found online:

These new rankings, alongside the ETU Points List and all other International Triathlon Union (ITU) rankings, can be found at www.triathlon.org/rankings.

The ETU Executive Board wants to thank Enrique Quesada for his help with creating the ranking system.

ETU President Renato Bertrandi said “We are confident that this new Elite Ranking System will create more interest amongst the athletes to compete in our European Cups. This is part of our long term strategy to enhance our European Cups for all our stakeholders.”

The ETU would like to remind athletes that the remaining European Cups are in Penza (18 August), Karlovy Vary (25 August); and the Grand Final will be in Sevilla (20 Ocotber).

The current ETU Junior Ranking system will remain in its current form.
