Cervélo is once again the leader of the pack in the Kona bike count for 2013 – according to the 2013 annual Kona count, which has been issued by Lava magazine, listing those brands counted at the 2013 GoPro Ironman World Championship.
Cervélo had 488 bikes on stand in Kona this year. While this is slightly up on the 483 bikes counted for Cervélo in 2012, the brand did see a slight erosion in share this year. Cervélo claimed 24% of all bikes in the 2013 Kona bike count – down from a 26% share in 2012.
The top three bike brands in the Kona bike count – Cervélo, Trek and Specialized – saw their combined share fall from 47% in 2012 to 45% in 2013. Of the top three, only Specialized managed a year-on-year share gain.
The erosion in share for the leading bike brands can be explained by an increase in the total number of bikes counted year on year, and a fragmentation in the number of bike brands at Kona. (92 brands feature in the 2013 Kona bike count versus 49 brands counted in 2012.)
Cervélo does remain in a strong lead though, even with a slight erosion in share and a narrowing of the gap on its rivals. With 488 in total for Cervélo in 2013, this is 268 more than second placed Trek.
Zipp was once again a clear winner in the wheel count, with over 2,000 individual Zipp wheels taking on the Kona lava fields. In 2013, Zipp maintained its number one position, and it has been the top wheel brand for a number of years. In the wheel count, Zipp, Mavic and HED remain the top three favoured brands by Kona athletes. Although, it is worth noting that Mavic leapfrogged HED to claim the second spot in 2013.
ISM overtook Fi’zi:k to become the number one saddle brand. The most popular aero bar brand was once again Profile Design. Shimano was again the clear leader in the groupsets used by the pros and age-groupers at Kona. With a strong lead on its rivals SRAM and Campagnolo, Shimano held its 72% share of all groupsets counted.
For those power meters spotted at Kona, Quarq held its first place position, having previously jumped from third place in 2011 to first place in 2012. Garmin Vector pedal power meters also made a showing in Kona.
France’s LOOK held its overall number one position in the pedals count. For helmets, Rudy Project built on its number one position. Rudy Project also managed to increase its share from 35% of all helmets counted in 2012 to 38% in 2013. Meanwhile, Giro moved from third to second place in the helmet count and Specialized entered the top three, from a fifth place position in 2012.
New for 2013, the Kona count asked athletes if they had a coach; and the yes : no ratio stood at 57 : 43.

According to Lava mag, the count gives the industry a scope of the previous year’s buying trends and an idea of who the key players will be in the following year.
