The Ironman Foundation Community Fund will give US$55,000 in grant funding to non-profit groups in the greater Lake Placid community as part of the 2013 Ironman Lake Placid triathlon. The Ironman Foundation’s contribution will provide support to non-profit needs and initiatives within the local community.
With the 2013 donations from the Ironman Foundation, a total of over US$1,500,000 has been given to support the needs of the local community since the first Ironman Lake Placid event in 1999.
The Ironman Foundation will donate US$5,000 to the Lake Placid Central School to support a technology project to better equip classrooms with new digital classroom projectors in elementary schools. Additionally, with many of the first responders (Police, Fire and EMS) being volunteer based, the foundation will allocate an additional US$10,000 in donations to the volunteer departments across the region.
Completing the latest grant for Lake Placid, the Ironman Foundation will provide US$40,000 in grant donations to local non-profit groups whose organizations have a volunteer component.
The Ironman Foundation also provides registered athletes with the platform to fundraise for the foundation or a non-profit beneficiary of their choice as they train for their Ironman event. More than 300 athletes are registered as Ironman Foundation athletes for Ironman Lake Placid and many have signed up to participate in The Ironman Foundation’s ‘Your Journey, Your Cause’ initiative.
Through their participation with the foundation these athletes are giving back to non-profit organizations to make their race experiences more than just crossing the finish line – they are racing for a cause. Collectively they have raised over US$250,000 for their respective causes.
The Ironman Foundation featured athlete for Lake Placid is Michael Delgado, a firefighter from West Islip, N.Y. who has raised US$7,000 for the Lake Placid Community.
Debuting this year at Ironman Lake Placid is the Ironman Foundation Newton Running Ambassador Triathlon Team. The goal of the team is to have athletes share the concept of ‘service through sport and commitment to community.’
A total of 44 athletes were recruited to represent the team and share the goodwill of giving back to the community. Eleven members will be representing the team in Lake Placid and have identified the Ausable River Association as a team beneficiary.
Team members will be participating in a community service project on 25 July in Keene Valley to help the Rivermede Farm River Restoration, with cleaning up some of the effects of recent flooding. Additionally, the foundation team will support the Ausable River Association with a donation of funds raised by team members to be used toward completing the restoration.
