Wiggle Dragon Ride hits the road for tenth anniversary

The Wiggle Dragon Ride, which takes place this weekend, on Sunday 9 June, will celebrate its 10th successful year, with more than 4,000 riders flocking to Margam Park in South Wales to take on the challenge.

The Wiggle Dragon Ride which is one of the UK’s most prestigious sportives has attracted a number of famous faces this year, including rugby players Geordan Murphy and Austin Healey. Former English international, Healey said “I have encountered many battles with the Welsh both on the field and on Twitter. I like to think I have won ‘most’ of them! The Dragon will be taken on in the same vein with humour and an enormous effort, but like most of the previous battles it should be relatively easy to tame!”

The atmosphere to celebrate a decade of the Dragon Ride is set to be better than ever before with supporters expected to line the route along some of the most challenging climbs, providing an experience usually reserved for professional cyclists. The added bonus of the scenery of the Welsh valley climbs and the vistas within the Brecon Beacons is truly spectacular. This year 4 cyclists are going to be recognised for their fantastic achievement of having completed all 10 Dragon Rides.

Cyclists will also be able to take advantage of PowerBar products at the feed stations to provide some much needed energy to tackle those tough climbs and they’ll be grateful for a chilled Vita Coco to re-hydrate them at the finish line.

Dragon Ride founder Lou Lasardi said “I am delighted to celebrate the 10th year of the Dragon Ride. Little did I know that when I started the event back in 2004 with 280 cyclists that it would continue to grow into the UK’s most prestigious sportive. The unparalleled scenery and challenging course is what keeps people coming back year after year and I look forward to the next 10 years.”

Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race which organises the Wiggle Dragon Ride said “With road cycling now increasingly fashionable and 10,000 new cyclists taking to the road each year it is great to also reflect on a bit of history. The Dragon Ride was created 10 years ago and is now the most prestigious sportive in the UK, selling out in a day as thousands of people attempt to ‘Tame the Dragon’.

“Set in the amazing and challenging scenery of South Wales we love working hard to make sure the experience for every one taking part is special. We wish them well in this 10th Anniversary ride.”

Andrew Whillas Sponsorship Manager at Wiggle added “The Wiggle Dragon Ride is undoubtedly the highlight of the UK Sportive Season and the biggest event on Wiggle’s Calendar. The event brings the whole company together and there will be more than 30 staff at the event [with] those riding including our CEO, through to the Wiggle Mechanics at the feed stations and the Wiggle staff at event HQ.

“Wiggle is proud to be associated with such an iconic event and wishes every rider all the best for the Wiggle Dragon Ride 2013.”
