XTERRA expands in Spain with XTERRA Spain Tour in Berga

On 23 June 2013, the Catalonian town of Berga will host its very first Xterra event.

Xterra Berga is part of 2013 Xterra Berga Spain Tour, offering up to ten slots (tour ranking) for the Xterra World Championship in Maui, Hawaii.

The race combines 1.5K swim, 30K mountain bike and 10K trail run. The swim will be held at the Pantà de la Baells, well-known for regularly hosting other triathlon events. The bike and run courses, designed jointly with local triathlon club Bicixtrem, are reported to be highly demanding and will test athletes’ technical skills.

Registrations open by March 2013 and are limited to 500 individual and 100 team-relay slots.

Berga, located about 110km (1h10min) north of Barcelona, is the capital of the Berguedà country. The town is nestled at the foothills of the Pyrenees and links the Serra de Queralt mountains (1,292m) with the plains below.

Besides being a popular destination for triathlon events and outdoor activities (hiking, mountain biking, climbing), Berga is also famous for its historical and cultural heritage, especially the week-long traditional Festival of ‘La Patum’, recognized as a Humanity Heritage by Unesca in 2005.
