Since the creation of the ITU Technical Officials database in 2009, the global governing body for triathlon has seen its overall certification program complete four years. This provides ITU with strong data to evaluate the future of technical officials (TOs) in the sport.
In the last four years, ITU notes a 226% increase in the number of recorded technical officials around the world.
Through the ITU education program, the following has been accomplished:
- More than 750 officials have been certified as ITU TO level 1, which is an increase of 74% since 2010
- 153 officials have received the ITU TO level 2 certification, 60% more officials since the establishment of the new certification program
- 37 officials have obtained the highest certification level in ITU, which is an increase of 60% from 2010.

In the future, ITU will explore moving to an e-learning platform for its validation process. This will allow the organisation ‘to continue growing the TO database, while decreasing assets invested in seminars and courses.’
The ITU Technical Officials’ Certification Program is based over previous education programs and was re-established in 2009 to develop technical officials and defines the needed requirements to officiate on different level of ITU events. The purpose of this program is:
- To identify and make transparent the criteria needed to be gained by technical officials
- Establish the level of certification required to manage ITU events
- Identify the role & responsibilities of every one include in the process
- Establish the criteria to accredit National Federations to certificate ITU Level 1 officials (NTO)
