Billed as ‘the perfect introduction to triathlon’, Derby City Council in conjunction with UK race organiser Punishing Events are partnering on this year’s Derby City Triathlon. There will be a Sprint and Super Sprint event – giving options for first timers and more experienced triathletes alike.
Giving it a tri
Based at Moorways Sports complex in the centre of Derby, the swim will take place in the 25m pool, then a bike route through the local area past the famous Rolls Royce factories before an off road run, which will finish on the renowned and recently resurfaced athletics running track. The transition will be in the centre of the running track.
Spectators can therefore get a great view of all the action from the athletics stand, and Punishing Events will be working to deliver ‘a great atmosphere and plenty of support.’ The organisers also noted that it will also be running a ‘Give it a Tri day’, before the event, with more details to follow as they become available.
Information for beginners
The event is aimed at beginners and Punishing Events expects over 50% of the field will be taking on their first triathlon. The team notes, ‘All you need is a swimming costume or trunks, goggles (not compulsory), a bike (road or mountain bike as long as it is in roadworthy condition),an approved cycle helmet (compulsory) and a pair of trainers.’
Swim
200 or 400m: 8 or 16 lengths of the-25m indoor heated swimming pool (any stroke is fine).
Bike
10K or 20K cycle through the heart of Derby, completing either one or two laps of the relatively flat out and back course.
Run
2.5K or 5K
The super sprint or sprint distance run route is all off-road over nearby fields, most of which will be visible for the spectators from the stand. Having completed the main run route, athletes then enter the stadium to complete a final lap of the track before making a big finish in front of the main stand.
