The organizers of the 2014 Rocketman Florida Triathlon, which takes place on 12 October, have announced the addition of a half iron distance race to its main event. The organisers note that the half iron/middle distance is ‘popular among seasoned triathletes’ and features a 1.2 mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run.
The Rocketman Florida also includes two other races – the Classic + with a 0.25 mile swim, 32-mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run and the International + featuring a 0.93 mile swim, 32-mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run.
The triathlon is set in one of the most iconic race venues in the world with more than 20 miles of the bike leg taking place inside the secured gates of the Kennedy Space Center and taking athletes past many of America’s greatest space program landmarks, including the Space Shuttle launch pads and the Vehicle Assembly Building.
The Rocketman Florida Triathlon is the only privately coordinated sporting event to ever take place at the Kennedy Space Center.
The event is capped at 1,000 total athletes, with 250 entrants allowed in the new half iron distance race.
