The PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon has added PointsMap technology to its event website. The addition of PointsMap will enable athletes, spectators and residents to ‘customize geographic information to suit their individual needs and interests for navigation and place identification.’
The Google-based maps will show up-to-date swim, bike and run courses, with typical zoom and pan features embedded for navigation. In addition, by selecting specific checkboxes adjacent to the online area map, users may choose among a list of display options. For instance, triathletes may be interested in the location of aid stations, transition locations, bike support and the finish line.
Spectators may customize their map to identify restaurants, entertainment and restrooms. Residents could be interested in traffic detours or viewing locations. Event sponsors may also have information included about their products or services.
“We constantly seek ways to improve and enhance the race experience for athletes and all involved in the PPD Beach2Battleship iron and half-iron distance triathlon,” said Jeremey Davis, PPD Beach2Battleship Race Director.
“We have a great event, and the addition of PointsMap will make it even better for participants. PointsMap will enable racers and their families to spend time enjoying the event and all that Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach offer.”
The annual PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon, now in its seventh year, is produced by Set Up Events and benefits the Wilmington Family YMCA. The event welcomes more than 2,000 athletes and their families to the mid-Atlantic destinations of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. Recognized as one of the top five triathlons in the world by readers of Triathlete magazine, the 2014 event will take place Saturday 25 October.
The full long distance race includes a 2.4-mile swim in Banks Channel along Wrightsville Beach, a 112-mile bike through New Hanover, Pender, Sampson and Bladen counties, and a full marathon of 26.2 miles that finishes in downtown Wilmington.
The middle distance course is a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run that also begins at Wrightsville Beach and ends in downtown Wilmington.
More than 2,000 athletes, including 19 international competitors and triathletes from 42 US states participated in the 2013 race, helping generate more than US$4 million in local economic impact. Funds raised benefit the Wilmington Family YMCA.
