Human Race has added a new elite wave to the traditional sprint distance at this year’s Shock Absorber Women Only Triathlon. Setting off before the rest of the field, the wave will be open to any triathlete who is capable of recording a sub 1hr 12 time at two or more recognised sprint distance triathlons.
Human Race that this new wave offers a great opportunity for those looking for a challenge to step up and test themselves against the best female triathletes the UK has to offer, with the added benefit of competing for a pot of prize money that will be distributed between the top five finishers.
As well as the traditional waves that are split by age groups, Human Race has also added waves for triathletes who are capable sub 1hr 20 and sub 1hr 25 times for those in the field with a more competitive streak. Meanwhile, those tackling a triathlon for the first time or just feeling their way into the sport can arrive early and watch the elite wave set off, and apply the inspiration to their performance later in the day.
Emma Pallant, 2013 British Triathlon Champion, will be taking part in the event and said, “I am incredibly excited to race at Dorney and see girl power in full force! No matter what shape, size or age, anyone can take part in triathlon. It’s such an inspirational sport, having inspired me to convert from a running background, and I hope you will come join me and give it a go!”
Zara Hyde Peters OBE, Chief Executive at the British Triathlon Federation said, “This event is fantastic at attracting more women into our sport each year. The new elite wave is a great addition to this event, and gives participants the chance to be inspired by the elite British female triathletes showing the way, before taking on their own personal triathlon challenge in the open racing”.
The event takes place just two weeks before this year’s Commonwealth Games so some of the elite GB triathletes will take this opportunity to get some last minute confidence-boosting prep on the flat course at Dorney Lake, before the main event in Glasgow.
The prize money on offer – £1000 to first, £850 to second, £750 to third, £500 to fourth and £300 to fifth – is available to anyone who enters the elite wave; and offers an extra incentive for those taking on the elite field. Shock Absorber will also be giving away a sports bra to each of the first five elite wave finishers and the first place finisher in every wave thereafter.
The Shock Absorber Women Only Triathlon itself is geared towards celebrating women’s participation in triathlon and offers the opportunity for women of all abilities to compete like for like in a friendly, fun and non-intimidating environment.
With distances ranging from Novice (200m swim, 5.3K bike, 2.5K run) to Super Sprint (400m swim, 21.2K bike, 5K run) and Challenge (800m swim, 31.8K bike, 7.5K run), as well as a relay over the latter distance, Human Race notes ‘there is sure to be a race for all that will not only challenge participants but give them the ultimate feeling of achievement and most importantly have a fun day out.’
