The beautiful Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Spain, is getting ready to host 1,200 athletes from around the world for the official ETU European Half Distance Triathlon Championships this Sunday 18 October at Challenge Paguera Mallorca.
Earlier this year, the European Triathlon Union (ETU) and Challenge Family confirmed that Challenge Mallorca will host the 2014 ETU European Middle Distance Triathlon Championships on 18 October 2014.
The organisers note that Europe’s top names in triathlon will line up in a 70 deep pro field to try and claim the prestigious title of European Champion. Participating athletes include former European Champion, Ritchie Nicholls (GBR) in the men’s and multiple long distance champion Helle Frederikson (DEN) in the women’s race.
The Challenge Mallorca event is the climax of a week-long celebration of sport providing athletes, their families and the local community with a varied programme that includes Junior Challenge Paguera for youngsters, Challenge Women 5K fun run, plus a circus and live music.
Thousands of spectators are expected to crowd into the finish area and line the course, promising ‘a race not only spectacular for its course but also for its atmosphere.’
Challenge Paguera will consist of a 1.9K swim, followed by a 90K cycle and finally a 21K run. The swim is a single lap course between two of the most delightful coves on the famous Mallorcan coast. The race begins on Playa Torá and ends at Playa de la Romana, where T1 will be waiting.
The bike course promises to be fast. Without any major climbs, the highest peak being 151m, the riders complete two 45K laps along the coast, passing through some of the best known tourist resorts and alongside some of the island’s most popular beaches before heading inland into the midst of magnificent natural scenery in the foothills of the internationally famous Serra de la Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The event comes to an end on the seafront promenade. The run course is also a fast one, and involves four almost entirely flat laps beside the beaches of Els Morts, Torà and Paguera and through the Boulevard in the tourist resort of Paguera.
