The USA Triathlon Women’s Committee is currently seeking nominations for the Spirit of Judy Flannery Award that was established in 1997 in honour of Judy Flannery, a Grand Masters multisport athlete, who served as the first Women’s Commission chair and was killed in a bike accident.
The Women’s Committee is proud to reintroduce this award after a hiatus in honour of her memory and to support talented women triathletes who have contributed meaningfully to the sport of triathlon.
Past winners include: Clarinda Brueck, Celeste Callahan, Dottie Dorian, Sue Falsey, Melissa Merson and Kate Knight-Perry.
The Spirit of Judy Flannery Award will be presented at a special reception hosted by the Women’s Committee before the Athlete of the Year Dinner on Thursday 7 August 2014 at the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Nominees should best represent those special qualities of Judy Flannery. Among those include: 1) excellence in multisport; 2) high moral character; 3) demonstration of ‘giving back’ to the sport; 4) current female member in good standing of USA Triathlon; a preference will be noted for nominees in the Masters or Grand Masters division. Past award winners are not eligible.
To nominate a deserving female triathlete, individuals can submit a letter of recommendation that addresses each of the criteria listed above to Tara Comer, USAT Women’s Committee Chair at tscomer[at]gmail.com. The deadline for nominations is Monday 7 July 2014 and the winner will be notified by 10 July 2014.
