Long Course Weekend - Swim start

The Long Course Weekend, a popular three-day endurance festival in Pembrokeshire, Wales, is on the up. The organizing team, Activity Wales Events, has confirmed that it has now finalised and contracted a new event – Lanzarote Long Course Weekend, which will be held on 8-10 December on the Spanish Canary Island.

Discussions are also under way for expanding the Long Course Weekend format to Munich, planned for next June, and Mallorca for October 2016.

Showcasing this year’s event, Activity Wales has released a number of videos:

TV coverage of the event, on UK station Channel 4, is scheduled for 29 August.

This year’s 2XU Long Course Weekend welcomed a record breaking 6,000 participants and almost 20,000 supporters to Tenby and the surrounding areas. Pembrokeshire welcomed athletes from 46 different countries to the event that allows competitors to choose different events and distances within the weekend.

Athletes can choose to swim 1.2 or 2.4 miles on the Friday; bike 42, 70 or 112 miles on the Saturday; and run a 10K, half or full marathon on the Sunday. Athletes who attempt to complete the full Long Course Weekend gain the famous 4th medal. Here, participates would need to complete a 2.4 mile sea swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full marathon all within the allotted cut off times.

The prize fund offers £1000 for the swim 1st place, £1000 for the marathon 1st place and £1000 for the full Long Course Weekend winner. The Wales Swim offers £500 to the charity of the choice to whomever can beat the hare, which this year was Thomas Allen – who wears a golden swim cap. Meanwhile, the top 150 fastest riders of the King of the Hill in Saundersfoot are given the chance to win a brand new Ceepo Frame courtesy of Ceepo Bikes.
