Over 2,500 athletes will participate in Challenge Almere-Amsterdam on 11-13 September, celebrating 35 years of triathlon at this historic race.
Originally, the Holland Triathlon, based in Almere, the event has been running since 1981; and in 2013 joined other events in the Challenge Family series, such as the iconic Challenge Roth.
The last slot for Challenge Almere-Amsterdam 2015 was sold on the evening of Friday 4 September; and it was time for race director Richard Belderok to make a final calculation of the number of participants.
“After the possibility to register for the race closed last Monday, we received many requests by athletes who still hoped to enter,” said Belderok. “We shifted things around, and filled every free place left in the Transition Area. Now, there is absolutely no space left.”
This coming weekend, Challenge Almere-Amsterdam will establish an event record of more than 2,500 participants: starting with 710 athletes on Friday including 620 high school students in the Senior & No-Limit Challenge and Junior Challenge.
On Saturday, 1,392 participants will take part in the full and half distance Challenge Almere-Amsterdam, including world-class pro athletes such as Markus Fachbach, Dirk Wijnalda and Irene Kinnegim.
The weekend will end on Sunday with 416 participants taking part in the Family and Business Relay and the best Dutch teams will compete in the Lotto Premier League.
Due to a record breaking number of participants, the organizers add that this 35th edition of the Holland Triathlon is ‘yet again the largest triathlon event in Dutch history.’
