Nothing seems to be able to thwart the explosion of running in France. From joggers to die-hard marathon runners, from fans of asphalt or trails to mountain race or obstacle course enthusiasts, the running community sees its numbers grow by hundreds of thousands each year.
According to a study carried out last year by Kantar Sport, 7.8 million French people run at least once a month, up 32% from 5.9 million in 2013.
The study identified a 70% increase in the number of female runners between 2013 and 2014, a total of 3.4 million compared to 2 million the previous year. The percentage of women that have entered the Paris Half-Marathon and the Paris Schneider Electric Marathon has risen by 4% this year.
Over the same period, the number of runners in the 25-34 age group grew from 1.4 million to 2.2 million, up by 57%.
The study also found that running is becoming increasingly connected. 41% of runners say they train with their smartphone and 54% with a GPS watch keeping them informed of the various parameters of their training or their performance in competition.
