Tenerife Top Training is to become the Official Warm Weather Training Venue of national governing body Triathlon Ireland though to 2018. The training centre features a 400m running track, heated outdoor 25m and 50m swimming pools, a high-tech swim flume, indoor gym and is set at the foot of Mount Teide making for some excellent cycling and running routes.
With Ireland’s elite triathletes currently racing on the World Triathlon Series and a growing number of Development, U23 and Junior Athletes pushing to make their mark on the world stage, the facilities being made available to Triathlon Ireland will be of huge benefit to these athletes.
Stephen Delaney, Triathlon Ireland’s National Development Coach commented, “While we have access to superb training facilities and locations at home, we are always at the mercy of the climate.”
He added, “The Tenerife Top Training facility provides us with the opportunity to avail of consistent conditions in which to prepare for early season races and to work with development athletes as they build towards key national and international races.”
Professional Middle Distance Triathlete Kevin Thornton has experienced the facilities on offer first hand while training with ITU Professional Bryan Keane and racing there in October of 2014. Thornton went on to win the infamous Teide Xtreme Triathlon on that occasion.
“The centre is set in the foothills of Spain’s highest mountain, Mount Teide, on the southern end of Tenerife so there is an abundance of cycling routes that take you in, around and up Mount Teide and there are numerous trail running routes right on your doorstep,” said Thornton. “The heated 50 and 25 metre outdoor pools and swim flume are world class also.”
Tenerife Top Training’s Marketing Manager, Holger Sowa added “We’re proud to be partnering with Triathlon Ireland and playing a part in the development and promotion of the sport in Ireland. This is something great for us and we are looking forward to welcoming some of Ireland’s top triathletes to our facility.”
Tenerife is accessible via Aer Lingus and Ryanair with a wide selection of accommodation, bike hire, physio and other services on hand.
