On 16 April 2016, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Ecuador rocked the Andean nation, crushing buildings in urban areas and damaging homes and infrastructure along the coast. Over 500 people have lost their lives.
The mission of the IRONMAN Foundation is to provide support to communities where IRONMAN events are held – through philanthropy, volunteerism and grant making. With this in mind, the IRONMAN Foundation is reaching out to all its athletes around the world to provide assistance to Manta, Ecuador, the home of IRONMAN 70.3 Ecuador.
Aftershocks and secondary earthquakes of significant magnitude continue to impact these decimated areas daily. Local residents are in critical need of basic supplies. The IRONMAN Foundation’s local team – SPORTIME is on the ground in Manta, Ecuador, and will immediately provide relief to those in the community. The foundation adds that 100% of the funds raised will make a difference and help those in need.
The IRONMAN Foundation is offering two options to help make a difference:
- Purchase a ‘Humanitarian’ T-shirt — 100% of the funds raised will be donated to needs of the community; and/or
- Make a donation directly to support this initiative.
The IRONMAN Foundation has already placed a donation of US$10,000.00 directly into the Manta community and the charity is hoping that athletes around the world will help to make a greater impact in this IRONMAN community.
