The full distance triathlon marketplace appears to be shifting, as races in Europe come and go. Despite hosting one of the world’s largest IRONMAN branded events in Mallorca, with IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca, the full distance (Thomas Cook sponsored) IRONMAN Mallorca has now been discontinued for 2017.
A popular destination for travelling endurance sport enthusiasts, Mallorca is one of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, and has build a reputation for swim/bike/run training camps through to a range of endurance sport events.
A release from IRONMAN stated:
After careful consideration, IRONMAN Mallorca will not take place in 2017. We appreciate the efforts and support of the city, government officials, as well as our athletes, volunteers, partners, and everyone else involved in putting on this triathlon over the past three years and look forward to their continued support for the future Nirvana IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca race that will continue as scheduled.
We appreciate our athletes’ dedication and understand the disappointment that some athletes will have for not being able to do a full-distance race in this location in 2017. There are several IRONMAN events in the EMEA region open for registration at ironman.com and we hope those athletes are able to find another IRONMAN race that fits their interests.
