Given the physical and financial investment required to compete in an IRONMAN triathlon, insurance provider Allianz notes that ‘it makes sense to consider protecting this investment with insurance’. Following a partnership with IRONMAN, participating athletes can ‘protect their registration investment with insurance from leading consumer specialty insurance provider Allianz Global Assistance’.
Allianz Global Assistance’s ‘Registration Protector’ will be available for purchase by IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon registrants beginning in October 2016. For an additional fee, Registration Protector will cover up to US$1,000 in non-refundable race registration fees. Also included with each insurance policy is Competition Care, a 24/7 service available to insured racers that can provide race-day information, find a nearby bicycle repair shop, locate athletic equipment stores and more.
During registration, participants will be provided with the option to insure their IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 registration fee. With Registration Protector, a participant who misses an event for a reason such as a covered injury or illness, job loss, transportation delays, military/family/legal obligations, and other covered reasons can get their registration fees reimbursed.
“We understand that sometimes an injury, illness or other unforeseen problem may cause an athlete to miss an IRONMAN,” said Shane Facteau, Chief Operating Officer of IRONMAN. “We are pleased to partner with Allianz to offer insurance that will provide a full refund of the IRONMAN registration fee when a racer has to bow out for a reason covered by the policy.”
The availability of Registration Protector was announced at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i, where Allianz Global Assistance was the Official Race Registration Protection Sponsor.

Allianz Global Assistance will manage all customer service and claims activity for Registration Protector policyholders and is ‘available 24/7 to answer questions or help solve problems’.
Terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions apply to all plans. Plans are available only to US residents. Allianz adds that not all plans are available in all jurisdictions.
