TriRock San Diego has today announced a new springtime date of 22 May 2016 making it ‘the first international triathlon distance of the year in San Diego.’ Also new in 2016, the international distance race will feature a point-to-point swim course ‘giving competitors the best chance to set new personal records.’
“The new swim course will certainly help our triathletes set new personal records and beat their goals,” said Cory Osth, Race Director. “A point-to-point system means the participants will be swimming with the current caused by the incoming tide instead of against it, allowing for the best conditions for the competitors. This could very well be the fastest 1500m swim course in SoCal.”
TriRock San Diego returns with both sprint (500m swim, 11 mile bike, 3 mile run) and intermediate (1500m swim, 22 mile bike, 6 mile run) distance events. The new date makes the San Diego race the first of the year for the TriRock Triathlon Series, which will take place in six cities across the US in 2016.
The downtown San Diego event starts at 06:30 PT and features a protected swim course in San Diego Harbor. The newly designed swim course will start on the docks in front of the Marriot Marina, just a short walk from the transition area behind the San Diego Convention Center.
The urban triathlon features a flat and fast bike course showcasing views of the Coronado Bridge and laps around the 32nd street Naval Base. The event concludes with a run along the San Diego Harbor, passing the USS Midway before a red carpet finish along the waterfront.
The 7th annual event is known as a rockin’ competition, followed by a post-race party and concert. Participants will receive a finisher’s medal, technical t-shirt, post-race breakfast and access to the concert and beer garden. The Finish Line Festival, located behind the San Diego Convention Center, will feature a multi-sport expo, refreshments and entertainment for the whole family.
Positioned as a perfect race for first timers, the swim course features a comprehensive buoy system which marks every 100m of for both the Sprint and Olympic distances. The buoy system provides clear swim course sighting for participants and enhances general water safety measures.
An Expo and Packet Pick-up will be held behind the San Diego Convention Center adjacent to the Bayfront Hilton from 10:00 – 17:00 on Saturday 21 May. Participants can pick up race packets, attend safety and course briefings and mingle through the exhibitors and sponsors at the expo.
