To help provide some context for the many multisport fans who will be cheering on the paratriathletes in Rio on 10-11 September, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) has released a preview of what’s in store, by the numbers:
- 365 – Days paratriathletes had to qualify for the Paralympic games
- 100 – Percentage of ITU World Paratriathlon Events Katie Kelly, Martin Schulz and Jetze Plat have won
- 60 – Paratriathletes competing in Rio for the first time
- 31 – Men lining up on Copacabana
- 29 – Women debuting in triathlon at the Paralympics
- 18 – National Paralympic Committees represented on the start list
- 7 – National Paralympic Committees with one athlete racing
- 6 – Gold medals, which will be awarded on 10-11 September
- 5 – World Championship titles Billy Chaffey has won in the men’s PT1 sport class – the most of any paratriathlete ever
- 4 – Sport classes represented with men’s PT1, men’s and women’s PT2 & PT4, and women’s PT5
- 3 – Athletes competing in one additional sport at the Rio Paralympics besides triathlon – Grace Norman, Allysa Seely in athletics; and Jetze Plat in time trial cycling
- 2 – Days of competition at Paralympics
- 0 – ITU races Katie Kelly has lost
At the Paratriathlon event in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, all competitors from different sport classes must compete over a course of 750m of swimming, 20km of cycling and 5km of running for athletes with different types of impairment. The men race on 10 September, followed by the women on 11 September.
