This Sunday 9th April is the ‘unofficial kick-off of the triathlon season in Europe’ with the 20th edition of Triathlon de Portocolom, in Mallorca, Spain. As a tradition, Portocolom hosts a full weekend for 1,000 athletes with two races on Sunday under the formats 55.5 and 111 (1km swimming, 100km cycling, and 10km running, and half of the distances for the 55.5). The organising team note that many professional triathletes will be lined up for Triathlon de Portocolom 2017.
The race involves a swim in the clear waters of Portocolom’s harbour. The cycle is a rolling course including the climb of Sant Salvador; and the run to the finish line is located in the heart of Portocolom’s Mediterranean village. With the main race taking place on Sunday 9 April, this is one of the earliest triathlon races in Europe in 2017. On 8 April there will also be a duathlon for children, billed as TriKids. In addition, a new expo area will aim to improve the athlete’s experience.
The organizing team has announced a pro prize pot of €4,000 shared among the top-three male and female ranked athletes in both the 55.5K and 111K formats.
Portocolom is seen as a good spot to start training and racing in Europe due to its weather in April. The island has a number of flight connections to main European cities. Last year, athletes from 20 different countries visited and ‘enjoyed a demanding bike segment after a short swim leg in the clear waters of the Mediterranean sea’.
Triathlon de Portocolom is organized by Kumulus Mallorca, Club Triatló Portocolom, with the strong support from Ayuntamiento de Felanitx (local council).
