Red Bull Steeplechase is returning to Lynmouth, Devon in South West England for the second year running on Sunday 18 June 2017. With registrations now open, the gruelling race will see 500 male and female runners tackle the 23-mile route, which takes place along the stunning coastline of Exmoor National Park.
Known for its brutal hill climbs and long cross-country distances, Red Bull Steeplechase has three knockout points at steeples along the way. This popular format reduces the number of racers down until there are just 20 competitors from each category in the final leg.
This year will be the fifth occurrence of Red Bull Steeplechase – the first three events took place in the Peak District. The race takes place over 23 miles, with only 20 men and 20 women making it to the finish line. Runners will make a total height gain of 1840 metres. Last year’s winners were Ricky Lightfoot (male category) and Claire Rogers (female category) with times of 2:41:22 and 3:19:57 respectively.
Knockout 1 – The first 60% of men and 70% of women will progress through to the next stage.
Knockout 2 – The first 30% of male and 40% of female runners will make it through to the next stage.
Knockout 3 – Only 20 runners from each category will make it through to the final stage of the race.
The race is continuous. Those who make it through a checkpoint continue straight on and do not wait for everyone to complete a section. Runners will be able to clearly see their position at each knockout and those who don’t get through to the next stage will be transported back to the start in Lynmouth.
