More than 1,700 female athletes were registered to take part in day one of the 2017 Icy Hot IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship on Saturday 9 September 2017; while, more than 2,800 male athletes were registered to take part on Sunday’s race on 10 September. For the first time in IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship history, the race took the form of a two-day event, giving the female race its own spotlight on the Saturday with the men’s race on Sunday.

Athletes took on a 1.2-mile swim in the Tennessee River, a 56-mile bike up Lookout Mountain with views and through historic Chickamauga before finishing with a 13.1-mile run through downtown Chattanooga. Female competitors ranged in age from 18 to 74, with male athletes aged from 18 to 86. Professional women and men separately competed for US$125,000 total prize purses.
