The Spanish coastal city of Valencia has been added to the ITU World Cup circuit for the 2020 season, with a standard distance race that will take place next year on May 2.
In 2019, Valencia hosted the Paratriathlon and U23 European Championships, as well as a European Cup. Next year, it will welcome top athletes from across the world in one of the last events included in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualification period.
The European Triathlon Union (ETU) has also approved its 2020 calendar, with a year that will see the Winter Triathlon World Championships, Multisport World Championships, Long Distance Duathlon World Championships and two events of the World Triathlon Series taking place in the continent.
For ETU, the season will start in February when winter triathletes will head again to Cheile Gradistei (Romania) for the Winter Triathlon European Championships.
Starting in March, European triathletes will have a busy season, with 12 European Championships across the season, from Duathlon in Punta Umbria (Spain) to the Cross Tri in Targu Mures (Romania) as well as Aquathlon and Middle Distance Triathlon in Walchsee in Austria.
The 2020 ETU European Championships will take place in Tartu (Estonia) in July, with the Sprint Championships taking place in Malmo (Sweden) in August.
A backbone of the annual racing calendar for European athletes is the series of European Cup events. The season starts in March in Huelva (Spain) with six more events in the calendar, and the juniors having 11 European Cups in the calendar for the season.
2020 will also see the Baltic Championships in Riga (Latvia) and the Mediterranean Championships in Sine (Portugal), among other events.
The 2020 season will also be long and busy for American triathletes, with the PATCO calendar for 2020 just being released, and with two legs of the World Triathlon Series taking place in America, as well as the 2020 World Triathlon Grand Final.
The Panamerican Cup will be comprised of 18 events in 2020, including elite and junior events, distributed all across the continent, with the first race taking place in February in Brazil to finish the season in Santiago de Chile in late November.
The South American Championships will be hosted in Lima, Peru, in May, while Santo Domingo in June will play host of the Panamerican Championships. Athletes will move to Sucre, in Bolivia, to compete at the Bolivarian Games and the Mixed Relay PATCO Championships will be organized in Brasilia in April.
The Asian calendar will be announced shortly. ITU adds that some additional events may be added in the coming weeks also for the other four continents.
