The Gran Fondo Alberto Contador is the latest victim in the ongoing cancellation of sporting events caused by an increase in Covid-19 cases. The event was scheduled for next Saturday, September 26, in the Valencian town of Oliva.
There were due to be two routes that crossed the provinces of Valencia and Alicante in Spain. However, the upturn in Covid-19 cases and the increase in hospital admissions in the Valencia community have caused new restrictions that ‘make it impossible to carry out the cycling event in which, despite the complexity of this edition, there were 1,000 registered.’
The event organizing team had developed a health protocol that included measures to carry out the event safely for all participants. This featured: interval starts, cleaning and disinfection, temperature controls, etc.
However, the evolution of the health situation has led the Consellería de Sanidad Universal y Salud Pública de la Comunidad Valenciana to cancel the event and deny the necessary authorization to hold it… ‘a decision respected by the [race] organization for whom the priority is to preserve the safety of its participants.’
