The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon organising team in South Africa note that they ‘remain focused on their race planning strategies for the event scheduled to take place on 18 October.’ This is amid the outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent national lockdown in the country that has stopped virtually every upcoming sports event in its tracks.
“While we acknowledge the far-reaching effects of this global pandemic, we are also hopeful that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon’s October event date puts us safely outside of the critical window,” said Renée Jordaan, incoming race director of the 2020 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.
“The safety of our athletes and crew remains our top priority, and we will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with all authorities and stakeholders once South Africa’s lockdown comes to an end.
“It will be our preference to postpone and move the race if this global health crisis continues to affect us, and we will follow through on all directives as the weeks and months progress.
Jordaan added “This is a challenging time for all, particularly in the light of all the uncertainties we now face. We therefore want to provide a sense of reassurance and hope by confirming that athletes will be refunded their 2020 entry fee if we are required to cancel the event.”
The event was recently awarded the prestigious World Athletics Gold Label Status for the fourth consecutive year – the only marathon on the African continent and one of only a select group of marathons in the world to have this status.
