From December 2020, all race organisers on njuko’s registration platform can reduce their environmental impact by giving participants the chance to plant a tree instead of receiving a race t-shirt.
A release from njuko notes that… ‘Every race t-shirt pollutes over 2kg of eCO2 into the atmosphere when it’s produced. As runners, many of us have a drawer full of t-shirts we never wear, so all this pollution is for nothing.’
Organisers can add Trees not Tees to their event on njuko. Those participants who don’t want a t-shirt will have a native broadleaf tree planted for them as part of Trees not Tees’ sustainable reforestation projects in Europe.
After each race, Trees not Tees will plant the trees and send each participant an e-certificate of their tree, including a photo, the species, geolocation and the race logo to share on social media. Race organisers pay Trees not Tees the equivalent t-shirt cost at around €2.55 per tree.
‘Many races from ultra-marathons to 10ks have already signed up, seeing at least 20% of runners choosing the tree option, so there is a clear demand for a green alternative.’
Meanwhile, all runners who want a race t-shirt still have this option, so njuko adds that… ‘It’s a win-win for race organisers, runners and the environment!’
