Having unveiled Routes for runners and riders back in March, Strava’s new route planning feature now integrates with Garmin devices – having already been made available for Wahoo device users.
The new Garmin Connect Courses API aims to make it easier to follow courses for running, cycling, hiking and more on a Garmin device. The integration allows users to import their route files created through third-party applications, such Strava and Komoot, and will automatically download to a compatible Garmin device.
The new Garmin Courses sync lets Strava athletes push routes to their Garmin device simply by ‘starring’ (favouriting) it in Strava. Athletes can then use Garmin’s navigation functionality including turn by turn navigation on their device. This feature is available to all Strava athletes, not just Summit (premium) subscribers.
Using Routes in Strava
- In the Strava app, select ‘Explore’ along the bottom row
- Tap into Routes to begin, then toggle filters to change route recommendations or select option to ‘draw your own’ route
Athletes can record and share activities with a free Strava account, while a Strava subscription allows members to set custom goals, receive personal heatmaps, or compete in Live Segments.
Garmin users also have the ability to use the Komoot app’s navigation and planning for free, with no limitations. Athletes with a premium Komoot subscription will receive additional planning features including weather, sport-specific maps and a multi-day route planner.
