British Triathlon has this week issued a statement, following the UK Government’s ‘rule of six’, which limits indoor and outdoor gatherings to six people.
The British Triathlon statement noted…
‘Further to the Prime Minister’s statement in Parliament, we understand that organised outdoor sport in England remains exempt from the new restrictions. Furthermore, we also understand new restrictions on indoor activity in England only apply to team sports.
‘This means that organised swim, bike and run coaching, training and event activity remains exempt as long as it is done in a Covid Secure manner and in accordance with our guidelines. We continue to monitor this situation very closely and will update if the situation changes.
‘We also want to remind our community how vital it is to maintain social distancing and proper hand hygiene.’
For cycling activities specifically, British Cycling has confirmed that ‘club, group and recreation programme activities have all now resumed in England, and are currently limited to six riders.’
British Cycling noted that…
‘We are pleased to say that our activities are largely unaffected by this week’s changes, however we have made a number of amends to our guidance for clubs, coaching and events.’ These are:
- As of Thursday 24 September the ‘Rule of Six’ now applies for adults taking part in indoor sports. Therefore, while indoor coaching sessions for adults can still take place in groups of up to 30, the group will need to split into separate bubbles of six riders which should be kept separate during the session (i.e. not forming one large group on the track). Sessions for children and those with disabilities are exempt from this change.
- We are pleased to say that we can lift the suspension on indoor competition (such as track leagues) from Monday 28th September as planned.
- Visually impaired riders can now ride on tandems with people from outside their household.
With new coronavirus-related restrictions for sport announced, Sport England has also compiled answers on what is and isn’t allowed.
The UK Government’s ‘rule of six’ announcement, limiting indoor and outdoor gatherings to six individuals, has meant that, in England, individuals will need to adhere to the ‘rule of six’ if they’re playing team sports indoors – this means playing in a group of no more than six people.
Sport England has also provided a summary of what can continue. This includes individual use of gyms and swimming pools:
- Indoor team sports involving children aged under 18, played formally and under government-approved guidance
- Indoor team sports involving disabled adults aged 18 and over, played formally and under government-approved guidance, including groups of more than six following social distancing
- Use of indoor sport and leisure facilities, including gyms and swimming pools
- Organised indoor activities or exercise classes (these can take place in larger numbers, provided groups of more than six do not mix and the facility meets the government’s indoor facility guidance)
- Outdoor sports played formally and under government-approved guidance
- Outdoor sport and physical activity events following event-organiser guidance
- Informal indoor or outdoor sport and physical activity in groups of six or fewer while social distancing and following government guidance, and guidance from the sport’s governing body.
