Virtual Mammoth Gran Fondo introduces ‘e-Fondo’

The Mammoth Gran Fondo is introducing its first ‘e-Fondo’ for electric bicycles during its first virtual event during the month of September.

For the first time, due to COVID-19 and state and local regulations, the Virtual Mammoth Gran Fondo features a month-long challenge from September 1-30. In the challenge participants ride their bike – and for the first time, their e-bikes, as much as they can.

If participants are able to visit Mammoth Lakes, California, during September, the event organizers will have three different Gran Fondo routes available for self-supported rides. Historically, the Mammoth Gran Fondo has been a popular event, last year drawing more than 1,600 participants on rides of 42, 70 & 102 miles.

“The community of Mammoth Lakes has become a real hot bed for the electric bicycle movement, with ownership and rentals, at an all-time high, and even unprecedented use at the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park,” said Tamara Bankson, Executive Director, Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation (MMCF).

“We wanted to tip our hat to the leadership role we have created – going even further by designating this year as electric bike friendly, with the nation’s first e-Fondo.”

Participants in the Virtual Mammoth Gran Fondo, which includes the e-Fondo, can join as an individual, or join/create a team with friends. There are many options available to track cycling progress during the month, with Strava generally the most popular.

For those electing to ride e-bikes on the Virtual Mammoth Gran Fondo course on September 12 as an individual or small group, or virtually during September, organizers recommend the Piccolo (42 miles) and the Medio (70 miles). Both rides are unsupported, so riders should plan accordingly.

MMCF supports the philosophies of Eastern Sierra pioneers, that opportunity and access to our region remains open and inclusive to all. By connecting communities and delivering programs and financial aid for youth academics and athletics, the organisation inspires future generations to love the mountains, be the best version of themselves, and dream big.
