The new CLASH multisport festival weekend at Watkins Glen, New York, has opened for registration with the newly rebranded event business targeting athletes for ‘a #trication like no other’ on July 8-10, 2022.
CLASH, previously known as Challenge North America, delivers endurance sports events and festivals at speedways across the US. The company’s events run at NASCAR venues, with CLASH Watkins Glen 2022 the latest edition to open for business.
Formerly Challenge-branded, events have been CLASH USA rebranded, such as CLASH Daytona and CLASH Miami, alongside newly announced events in Watkins Glen and Atlanta – also set for 2022.
The company adds that it will further expand its portfolio to seven or more races in 2023, all of which are ‘planned to include professional races with prize purse offerings televised globally.’
In addition to event offerings for triathletes, cyclists and runners CLASH Watkins Glen 2022 also has a wine tasting experience. The event, next July, sees all registered athletes receive a free entry into what USA Today named the ‘Best Wine Festival’ – the Finger Lakes Wine Festival, with entry valued at US$45.
The CLASH Watkins Glen event weekend includes:
- Friday pm – WineK (5K) run
- Saturday am – age-group triathlon middle distance (1.2 mile swim, 50 mile bike, 10 mile run)
- Saturday am – bike (50 mile) + run (10 mile) event
- Sunday am – professional triathletes middle distance event
“We are thrilled to have Watkins Glen International Speedway join the 2022 CLASH Event Series next July and we can’t wait to welcome these world-class athletes to our community,” said Watkins Glen International (WGI) President, Michael Printup.
“Watkins Glen is situated in a historic and scenic area that will amaze participants during all three legs of the triathlon, and we know it will be special for the competitors and spectators alike to experience the track.”
Bill Christy, CEO of CLASH USA, said “The Glen offers the most spectacular getaway – with vineyards, waterfalls to hike, leisure canoeing and true glamping experiences that will make for a most memorable race getaway.
“The downtown area of Watkins Glen is not to be missed with boutiques and top chef inspired restaurants to keep families entertained throughout the festival weekend.
“Not to mention each athlete will be crossing the finish line directly into a party, the premier wine festival in the region. You’ll want to bring your whole crew, I will be!”
The middle distance triathlon will begin with athletes taking on a 1.2-mile swim in the southern portion of Seneca Lake through the middle of downtown, the largest of the glacial finger lakes in New York State.
Water temperatures are expected to be mild at approximately 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. A 50-mile bike ride is next with a point-to-point course that includes farmland, lake views and rolling topography.
The 10-mile run will utilize the historic Watkins Glen International Speedway, allowing participants to cross the line and then experience the Finger Lakes Wine Festival.
