Rapha’s first #GoneRacing film with L39ION of Los Angeles has premiered. At roughly 25mins long, the film covers three days at the Tulsa Tough races Oklahoma, USA.
Tulsa Tough is an annual three-day cycling festival set in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Home to large crowds and a generous prize purse, it’s a favoured venue for some of America’s biggest crit racing talents – drawing the US nation’s best riders to its tight and tumultuous street circuits.
In 2019, the races played host to the, then, new L39ION of Los Angeles team. This year, team founders Justin and Cory Williams, together with their diverse band of talented racers and a newly-formed women’s team, returned to Tulsa on the hunt for repeat success.
With a clutch of wins as well as the overall for both the men’s and women’s categories, the squad made its mark (again) in Oklahoma. The Gone Racing film goes behind the scenes to cover the three days of action – and inspiration – from L39ION’s perspective.
The film also highlights that the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was the site of the Tulsa Massacre on June 1, 1921. Considered one of the worse incidents of racial violence in American history, the massacre saw a white mob kill dozens of local black residents.
As a mark of respect to those impacted by the tragedy 100 years ago, and as a black-owned team, L39ION wore a ‘Greenwood Ave.’ patch, which was affixed to the riders’ jerseys during the racing in Tulsa.
L39ION of Los Angeles is a UCI Continental cycling team. It was founded in 2019 by brothers Justin Williams and Cory Williams with the goal of increasing diversity and inclusion in cycling.
