As one of few big trail events celebrated in 2020, Fjällmaraton in Sweden, returned as the fifth stop of the inaugural season of the Spartan Trail World Championship. This Blue Label race from the Spartan Trail World Championship was held on Saturday, August 7th.
Held in the heart of the fjörds in Sweden – the event followed the Lavaredo Ultra Trail in Italy and Brisbane Trail Ultra in Australia.
The Kia Fjällmaraton (45k) was the Trail Run Championship race; and the 100k served up the Trail Ultra Championship distance.
Fjällmaraton is one of Scandinavia’s older trail running races, and hosts a wide range of runners of all abilities, from orienteering experts, to fast runners and mountain specialists.
After Fjällmaraton there is now only one more Crown Label race – Ultra Pirineu – available on the inaugural Spartan trail running season.
Having cancelled its inaugural series season as a result of the global pandemic, the Spartan Trail World Championship kicked-off in 2021 with ‘some of the most prestigious races in the world.’
Each stop is categorized by three different labels, which separate from each other by the amount of points and prize money they give, based on events hierarchy and antiquity: Crown Label; Blue Label; and Green Label.
Spartan’s long-term plan for the growth of its trail running brand, features expansion outside of the World Championship, with regular season races around the world.
