On Sunday, August 15, approximately 1,600 athletes took the plunge into warmer than normal water (63ºF / 17ºC) to compete in the 40th anniversary Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
A summary video, from videographer Morgan Schmidt-Feng, summarises the event – with Bay Area mist, the boat trip to Alcatraz and the iconic race start where athletes leap from the boat into the water.
Olympian Ben Kanute and Emma Pallant-Browne took first place honours in the men and women’s pro division. This bucket list race features a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shore, an 18-mile bike ride and an eight-mile run through San Francisco.

The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon is owned and produced by IMG Worldwide with race direction provided in part by Premier Event Management.
The event’s official sponsors include Actelion, Aquasphere, KitBrix, Men’s Journal, Science In Sport, Hornblower Cruises & Events, Rudy Project, Finisher Pix, Sports Basement, Tribike Transport, Water World Swim, San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Recreation & Parks.
