The next edition of the BMW-sponsored HERO Südtirol Dolomites mountain bike race in Italy will focus on reducing its environmental footprint. Cyclists competing on June 18, 2022 will be asked to follow HERO TO ZERO, a sustainability programme that highlights the importance of human actions and their consequences for the environment.
The HERO Organising Committee states… ‘The Dolomites and our mountains are a precious and delicate asset we must preserve for the next generations.’
The Dolomites have been the stage of HERO Südtirol Dolomites, billed as ‘the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world’, for over 10 years.
The event organising team notes that the HERO TO ZERO sustainability program will be part and parcel of the mountain bike race and festival. It aims to protect the Dolomites and achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to protect the planet.
Gerhard Vanzi, founder of the HERO Series, said “The Dolomites and our mountains are a precious and delicate asset we must preserve for the next generations.
“The HERO TO ZERO project allows us to talk the talk and walk the walk by implementing actions and initiatives which shift everyone’s behaviour – participants, partners, institutions, tourist operators, and service suppliers.
“The goal is to carry out actions which can benefit the entire Dolomites in the long-term both in terms of environmental footprint and social footprint for the people living in the area.”
In the run-up to the 2022 edition and the start of the race, the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites’ efforts will focus on three core pillars: the environment, society, and governance. The event has developed an action plan focusing on green transition, reducing and offsetting CO2 emissions, as well as fighting waste and social inequality.
“The green transition is a watershed moment for humanity,” continued Vanzi, “It’s a goal we have to reach as the future of the planet is at stake; and, like with every other social objective, we’ll only reach it if we work together. Every little helps and everyone can do something.”
In April 2021 the evebt signed up to the UN’s Sports for Climate Action initiative. Its new sustainability project for the event in the Dolomites was developed with Aequilibria, a consultancy and training services provider for carbon management.
