Ibiza, in Spain, will host the World Triathlon Multisport Championships from 29 April to 7 May, 2023.
On the Spanish island, Santa Eulalia will host the Aquathlon and Duathlon races, while San Antonio will be the setting for Cross Triathlon and Cross Duathlon. The capital of the island, Ibiza, will welcome the participants of the Long Distance Triathlon and Aquabike World Championships.
Ibiza was originally slated the host the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in 2022. This year’s championships will instead be based in Târgu Mureș in Romania and Samorin in Slovakia.
The 2022 World Triathlon Multisport Championships will take place in Târgu Mureș from June 6-12 with Duathlon, Cross Triathlon and Cross Duathlon contested in the Romanian city. The Aquathon as well as the Long Distance Triathlon and Aquabike World Championships in 2022 will take place in Samorin, Slovakia, between August 18-21.
The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made its debut in the World Triathlon calendar in 2017 in Penticton (Canada). This was followed by Fyn (Denmark) in 2018 and Pontevedra (Spain) in 2019.
The event had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the impact of Covid, and in 2021 was split in three different locations: Almere (The Netherlands) hosted the Long Distance and Aquabike races, while the Duathlon World Championships were organised in Aviles, Spain, and the Cross Triathlon World Championships took place in El Anillo, Spain.
“The Multisport World Championships has been one of our most successful events in the last few years since we launched this product, and I am sure that the perfect combination of welcoming people, great weather conditions and stunning scenarios combining pristine beaches with wonderful nature will be a great setting for the Ibiza Multisport World Championships,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado.
“We are also extremely proud of Ibiza hosting this event in 2023, a clear proof of the legacy of our events, returning to the island only a few years after hosting the European event.”
President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation José Hidalgo said “This is a project of the whole island of Ibiza. We will be hosting six world championships in 10 days, and we will welcome over 4,000 participants and more than 12,000 friends and families, from all over the world.
“We are focused not only on organising great sporting events, but also on providing all athletes an incredible experience. And we are also committed with sustainability, willing to prove here in Ibiza that sport has a great role on generating a more healthy, sustainable and valuable society for everyone.”
