The Life Time Leadville Trail Marathon & Heavy Half presented by La Sportiva welcomed a field of more than 1,600 runners to Leadville’s high country on Saturday, June 18.

The marathon and half marathon events feature out-and-back courses that take runners across challenging singletrack terrain through the historic mining areas outside of Leadville, Colorado.

Both courses top out at 13,185 feet at Mosquito Pass, the highest continuous pass in the USA, and the event has been hailed as the highest start line for a trail marathon in the country.

Life Time, owner of the Leadville Race Series, welcomed runners aged 17 to 81 years of age from 47 US states and eight countries at the event.

“What a tremendous record setting day,” said Tamira Jenlink, Race Director at Life Time. “Not only two course records set in our men’s marathon and half marathon race, but an equally amazing and close race on the women’s side also.

“While the weather was a consideration today, it turned out to be near perfect temperature for our athletes.”

The iconic Life Time Leadville Trail 100 Run presented by La Sportiva, also known as the ‘Race Across The Sky’ will take place on August 20.

This weekend’s Life Time Leadville Marathon also kicked off the season’s Lead Challenge, where participants race five of Leadville’s trail run and mountain bike events, ranging from 26.2 to 100 miles, for a total of 282.4 miles. Racers must complete each event within the allotted cut off time in order to move on and be eligible for the next event in the series.

Started with only 45 runners as the Leadville Trail 100 Run in 1983, the Leadville Race Series now consists of seven running events and four mountain biking events, plus six events in the Leadville Qualifying Series. The race series stretches across three months, and hosts thousands of racers on foot and on mountain bike.
