Produced by Life Time, the 2022 Garmin UNBOUND Gravel presented by Craft Sportswear wrapped up on Sunday, June 5, in Emporia, Kansas.
Battling rain and muddy conditions around 4,000 riders took on a range of distances such as the 100-mile, 200-mile and 350-mile races. Despite challenging conditions, the overall race winners posted some impressive times:
- 100-Mile Distance Women’s Division – 1st: Marisa Boaz, 35, of Waukee, IA, with a time of 5:23:16
- 100-Mile Distance Men’s Division – 1st: Ethan Overson, 21, of Longmont, CO, with a time of 5:01:01
- 200-Mile Distance Women’s Division – 1st: Sofia Gomez Villafane, 28, of Heber City, UT, with a time of 10:27:41
- 200-Mile Distance Men’s Division – 1st: Ivar Slik, 29, of Dulvendrecht, Netherlands, with a time of 9:22:04
- 350-Mile (XL) Distance Women’s Division – 1st: Cynthia Frazier, 29, of Lexington, VA, with a time of 22:25:18
- 350-Mile (XL) Distance Men’s Division – 1st: William Harrison, 34, of Charlotte, NC, with a time of 20:17:29
Cyclists ranging in age from 10 to 89 representing all 50 US states and 44 countries took on the Junior, 25-mile, 50-mile, 100-mile, 200-mile and 350-mile XL distances on a new, southbound course.
“This was a fantastic weekend of racing, riding and camaraderie,” said Kimo Seymour, President of Media and Events at Life Time. “After a start with some amazing weather, the rain and mud provided epic conditions.
“Feedback from athletes has been overwhelmingly positive. From the intensely competitive pro race at the front, to the masses of amateurs, the Life Time team is so pleased to hear all the amazing memories that were created at this year’s Garmin UNBOUND Gravel.”
UNBOUND Gravel (formerly Dirty Kanza) is positioned as the world’s premiere gravel race, covering hilly terrain surrounding Emporia, Kansas. 2021 was the first running of UNBOUND Gravel under its new name.
The event also served as the second event in the new Life Time Grand Prix presented by Mazda – a series of six off-road races where 60 cyclists compete for a US$250,000 prize pool.
