New IRONMAN 70.3 Mar del Plata joins IRONMAN Argentina race weekend

IRONMAN has confirmed that the city of Mar del Plata in Argentina will host the inaugural edition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Mar del Plata triathlon, set to take place on Sunday, December 4, 2022. The event will coincide with the full-distance IRONMAN Argentina triathlon taking place on the same day.

“We are excited to grow our portfolio of races in Argentina,” said Joanna Jordan, Vice President – Managing Director of Latin America for The IRONMAN Group.

“By adding an IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon on the same day as the full-distance IRONMAN Argentina event, we hope to provide options for athletes who want to compete in this truly unique destination.

“We look forward to welcoming people from around the world to compete in the IRONMAN 70.3 Mar del Plata and IRONMAN Argentina triathlons and enjoy what this community has to offer this December.”

The new 70.3 Mar del Plata race will start with a 1.9 km (1.2 miles) swim in the Mar Argentino. Once out of the water, athletes will transition onto the bike for 90 km (56 miles) of cycling on the Interbalnearia route, before capping off their race with a 21.1 km (13.1 miles) run through the streets of Mar del Plata and a finish line at the statue of the Sea Wolf, a popular local tourism destination.

A city in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, Mar del Plata, is one of Argentina’s top beach resort towns highlighted by 10 miles of sandy beaches. Mar del Plata has also played host to the IRONMAN South American Championship race on three separate occasions.

The 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 Mar Del Plata offers slots to the 2023 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place in Lahti, Finland on August 26-27, 2023.
