After two years of absence due to the pandemic ÖTILLÖ is returning to the Isles of Scilly in South West England to put on the fifth edition of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Isles of Scilly. Set for the weekend of June 4-5, 2022, more than 500 racers representing close to 20 nations will be participating in the UK event.
On Sunday, June 5th the second stage of the 2022 ÖTILLÖ World Series will start on the island of St Mary’s and then circumnavigate the islands of Bryher, Tresco and St Martin’s before heading back to the finish on St Mary’sSome of the best racers in the world will attend with world champions and former world champions on the start line.
On Saturday, June 4th ÖTILLÖ Swimrun will host two shorter races on and around St Mary’s. These races aim to make the sport of swimrun possible for anyone who likes to swim and to run, making for a fun way to explore the island.
All races are open for teams of two or for solo racers.
Close to 220 racers representing nearly 20 nations will take the start for the Sunday World Series race (June 5th). Some of the best two-person teams in the world will chase the coveted nine qualification spots to the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship.
Sunday’s race features a total distance of 37.1 km, of which 8.4 km is swimming (eight sections) and 28.7 km is trail-running (nine sections).
Two of the swim sections are longer than 2,000 metres in the open Atlantic Ocean. Depending on conditions, these stretches could be very rough. The water is around 15C and the swims will be a difficult challenge even for the fittest. The fastest teams are expected to complete the course in around five hours.
On Saturday, June 4th the two shorter distances aim to make the sport of swimrun accessible. Here, the Sprint distance is 15.4 km. It also has eight sections of swimming and nine sections of running. However, the total distance of swimming is a shorter 2.5 km and the trail-running is 12.9 km. This course circumnavigates the island of St Mary’s. The name refers to the race distance and not to speed.
The Experience distance on June 4th is 7.6 km. It has three sections of swimming and four sections of running. The total distance of swimming is 900m and the trail-running is 6.8 km. This course does a loop around the Garrison and the west-end of St Mary’s.
