The ‘Hero To Zero’ project was developed for the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites mountain bike event, which was held on June 18, 2022. The initiative, championed by the event organisers, aimed to create events, tasks, and activities in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The objective was to reach net-zero emissions by reducing and offsetting CO2 emissions from the event.
The 2022 HERO Dolomites produced 91,000 kg of CO2 which will be offset by planting new trees. According to the organisers, thanks to this initiative, the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites has become the first race in the mountain biking world to have published (and acted upon) a sustainability report.
Gerhard Vanzi, founder of the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites, said “The green transition is a watershed moment. It’s an important goal as the future of our planet is at stake.
“Just like any other social project, we’ll only reach this goal if we work together; because, at the end of the day, every little thing helps, and everyone can contribute without having to drastically change their lives.”
‘Hero To Zero’ at the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites event focused on three main pillars: the environment, society, and governance. The organisers developed a plan… ‘with targeted initiatives aiming to implement a green transition and fighting food waste, social inequality, and to reduce and offset CO2 emissions. A plan which it will also implement in future editions.’
Gerhard Vanzi added, “We truly wanted to focus on acting in a timely manner, taking matters in our own hands, faced with the serious climate changes we’re starting to witness day in, day out.”
The 2022 HERO Südtirol Dolomites took place in June and produced 91,000 kg of CO2. A regional and international tree planting programme, based on international standards, was launched to offset the produced emissions… ‘every ton of CO2 will equate to one planted tree.’
