The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has announced that Rocky Harris will join the organization as its Chief of Sport and Athlete Services.
In November 2021, the USA Triathlon (USAT) Board of Directors confirmed a contract extension for USAT CEO Rocky Harris, through 2028. However, he is now departing triathlon’s national governing body in the US to take on a role with the USOPC… ‘as a steward of the Olympic and Paralympic movements in the US… tasked with optimizing sport performance and athlete well-being to ensure Team USA is positioned for success.’
“CEO Rocky Harris announced this morning he is taking a role at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee as the Chief of Sport and Athlete Services,” said Joel Rosinbum, Chair of the USA Triathlon Board of Directors.
“The USA Triathlon Board of Directors are grateful for Rocky’s leadership over the past five years and his unwavering support of all who are a part of the triathlon/multisport community. His collaborative approach, willingness to think differently, take risks, and be a servant leader has made a significant and positive impact on our sport, especially during the pandemic.
Rosinbum continued, “The USA Triathlon leadership team and staff are exceptional and we have complete confidence in their ability to sustain this momentum and upward trajectory. We couldn’t be more excited about the future of USA Triathlon and the opportunity to work alongside the next leader of our organization to continue to implement and accomplish our strategies and target outcomes outlined in our long-term strategic plan – Elevate 2028.”
Harris will join the USOPC in early September and will be based in Colorado Springs. The new role at USOPC includes oversight of athlete service programming – inclusive of athlete mental and physical well-being – Olympic and Paralympic sport performance, national governing body services, sport operations and collegiate partnerships.
“I am honoured to take on this important role and bring my experience in the Olympic and Paralympic movements, collegiate athletics and professional sports, and my passion for helping Team USA athletes achieve greatness to the USOPC,” said Rocky Harris.
“NGBs play a vital role in both identifying, developing and supporting athletes and growing sport in the United States, and the responsibility to take an active role in working across summer and winter NGBs, including our internal paralympic NGBs, is not a charge I take lightly.”
He continued, “We have an incredible opportunity ahead of us on the road to Paris, Milan-Cortina and then a home Games in Los Angeles, and I can’t wait to get to work with the USOPC team – a group that is as passionate, dedicated and proficient as any in the world – and our NGB partners to ensure Team USA athletes are fully successful and fully supported.”
