World Bicycle Relief (WBR) is aiming to create the largest single-day cycling event in the world on June 3, benefiting women and girls with life-changing bicycles.
In partnership with Strava, World Bicycle Relief is energizing cyclists of all abilities to contribute their ride to the million-km global challenge that runs from June 3-5
Centering around World Bicycle Day, on Friday, June 3, the Pedal to Empower campaign is central to World Bicycle Relief’s mission to empower women and girls in rural regions through access to life-changing bicycles.
Riders of all abilities and experience levels will join Pedal to Empower from around the world, indoors or outdoors, solo or with family and friends. They can also organize a ride in their areas, for their workplaces, or search for a group ride in their communities.
Cyclists are invited to help World Bicycle Relief reach its goal of 1 million km ridden between June 3-5 by registering at pedaltoempower.com. The event is free to join, with optional fundraising and donations welcomed to help mobilize women and girls around the world.
In partnership with Strava, participants also can join the Pedal to Empower Strava challenge to log their miles and earn an exclusive badge.
Ian Elliott, Senior Director of Global Marketing & Social Impact at Strava, said “At Strava, we work to encourage our global community of 100 million athletes to find freedom through movement.
“We’re honoured to be a part of World Bicycle Relief’s flagship ride, Pedal to Empower, to get people of any ability, in any location, on a bike to go for a ride this June.”
All money raised will go toward World Bicycle Relief’s mission to help people conquer the challenge of distance, and achieve independence. Access to reliable transport helps to unlock the potential of thousands of women and girls by providing them with the means to focus on education, obtain vital healthcare services, and achieve greater earning potential.
Recent research from WBR found that when girl students are coupled with a reliable bicycle, they are 19% more likely to complete their education.
Adrienne Karecki, Global Executive Director of Development & Communications at World Bicycle Relief, said “We believe women and girls can change the world.
“By taking part in the biggest single day of cycling in the world, cyclists and their supporters can help create immediate impact for those who don’t have access to their own means of transportation.
By donating whatever they can and riding with us, cyclists around the world will help women and girls live safer lives, access education and healthcare quickly, or simply cut the time they spend traveling in favor of entrepreneurship and play.”
