The International Triathlon de Portocolom is getting ready to celebrate its 25th anniversary on April 2, 2023. Held in the municipality of Felanitx in Mallorca, Spain, the early season event features two different distances: 55.5, (500m swim, 50km bike and 5km run) and the 111 (1,000m swim, 100km bike and 10km run).
The event organising team reports that, in 2023, amongst the registered athletes there are 25 nationalities represented, with 40% international triathletes overall and 20% female participation.
The swim will be in the Portocolom bay. The cycling segment will take place on a 50km circuit that takes in Puig de Sant Salvador. The run will take triathletes to the lighthouse of the town, which is only open on the day of the event for the enjoyment of the athletes.
The finish line is located in the heart of the Club Náutic de Portocolom, running along the streets of the typically Mediterranean village.
Jaume Vicens, the event’s alma mater and a pioneer of triathlon in the Balearic Islands, has been race director since 1998, when barely 30 athletes jumped into the water in the first edition.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Mallorcan triathlete Mario Mola will once again be the event ambassador, a role he undertook in 2022, when he also convincingly won the 55.5 distance race. The three-time world triathlon champion said “The Triathlon de Portocolom is one of the mythical competitions of this sport at an European level.
“It is so special, with a top organization, and top services and conditions for all kind of triathletes. It has a very fun format with athletes able to enjoy a unique environment in the bay, the roads around Felanitx and the ascent to Sant Salvador, to end up running through the old town and around the Portocolom lighthouse. As a local athlete I am very proud to join the Balearic triathlon community again in 2023.”
The Triathlon of Portocolom is organised by event organising firm Kumulus and the Club Triatló Portocolom; with the support of Felanitx Town Council; and sponsored by the European Union Next Generation EU, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism; the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the Tourism Strategy Agency of the Government of the Balearic Islands (AETIB) and the Fundació Mallorca Turisme.
