Thirteen years after hitting the market with its CloudTec shoe technology, Swiss sportswear brand On argues that it is now taking its running technology to the next level. The company’s new Cloudsurfer shoe has been revamped using On’s latest CloudTec Phase to deliver ‘the smoothest ride ever’.
Over a decade ago, On launched its first shoes that sought to combine performance and comfort – aiming to create the sensation of ‘running on clouds’. Now, the company has further developed this technology while paying homage to the original shoe.
Using finite element analysis (FEA), On has modelled how its products react to real-world forces. This process investigated the impact of structures and materials on the body while running, to develop properties that help to minimize stress.
The result is On’s CloudTec Phase midsole technology, which claims to deliver an ‘incredibly smooth ride and cushioned landing.’

On adds that… ‘Newly shaped elements made from Helion super foam collapse like dominos and interlock for a revolutionary rolling motion and stride transition, ensuring a level stride throughout the foot’s roll and proper energy return.’
This design removes the need for a Speedboard within the midsole, reducing weight and waste. And thin rubber pads on the outsole provide traction and durability in both wet and dry conditions.
The new Cloudsurfer is also looking to make waves with sustainability. On uses the dope-dyeing method for colouring the shoe’s upper, saving 95% of water compared to conventional dyeing methods. Since CloudTec Phase doesn’t have a Speedboard plate, less material is needed for the midsole. In addition, the upper is made of 100% recycled materials.
While the new Cloudsurfer is the first model built with CloudTec Phase, On notes that other models will follow. Although, the original CloudTec will remain an integral part of the product portfolio.
The Cloudsurfer is available for £150 online and via select international retail partners from March 23, 2023.
