22 nations at 18th edition of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship

ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship, in Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago will see 160 teams from 22 nations start at the event’s 18th edition.

Held on Monday, September 2, 2024, athletes will will trail-run and open-water swim for 70km across the Stockholm archipelago. ÖTILLÖ will decide the 2024 Swimrun World Champions in the female, mixed and male categories.

ÖTILLÖ, meaning ‘island to island’ in Swedish, offers participants technical trails, slippery rocks, and cold, sometimes rough swims. Strong currents are part of the demanding course, with 60km of running and 10km of swimming, over and between 24 islands in the Stockholm archipelago.

  • 70km running and swimming from dawn till dusk in the Stockholm archipelago
  • 61km of trail running
  • 9km of open water swimming in the Baltic Sea
  • Water temperature 14–16° C
  • 24 islands to cross
  • 50 changes between running and swimming
  • The swims are between 30 and 1,600 metres long
  • The runs are between 75 and 17,650 metres long
  • 160 teams – three categories: women, mixed, men
  • Teams of two
  • 22 nationalities from across the world

ÖTILLÖ’s international swimrun series was born in 2006 and has since been ranked by CNN as one of the toughest endurance challenges in the world.

In 2024, the following ÖTILLÖ World Series races are qualifiers for the 2025 ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship:

  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Engadin, Switzerland, June 29
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Whistler, Canada, July 7
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Gothenburg, Sweden, August 3
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Casco Bay, USA, August 11
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Mackinac, USA, August 25
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Orcas Island, USA, September 15
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Cannes, France, October 14
  • ÖTILLÖ World Series Austin, USA, November 3

At each World Series event an Experience & Sprint race is also organized for those to dip their toes into swim-run.
