World Triathlon has confirmed that, in upcoming elections, eight candidates are in the running for the presidency of the international governing body.
The elections are scheduled to take place during the World Triathlon Congress in Torremolinos, Spain, on October 21, 2024. The current President, Marisol Casado, who has been at the helm for 16 years and is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is not seeking re-election.
A release from World Triathlon noted that… ‘The Presidential elections marks a significant moment in the organization’s history as it welcomes a new leadership era.’
The candidates vying for the position of World Triathlon President are:
- Dr Debbie Alexander (RSA)
- Mr Antonio Alvarez (MEX)
- Mr Antonio Arimany (ESP)
- Ms Michelle Cooper (AUS)
- Mr Mads Freund (DEN)
- Mr Ian Howard (GBR)
- Mr Shin Otsuka (JPN)
- Mr Tamas Toth (HUN)
All eight candidatures have been officially approved by the World Triathlon Credentials Committee, ensuring that each candidate meets the stringent eligibility criteria as set forth by World Triathlon.
Each candidate submitted their bids, which received endorsements from their respective national federations, before the designated deadline, confirming a commitment and readiness to lead the organization.
