The inaugural edition of the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Louisville triathlon in Kentucky is set take place on Sunday, August 18 with IRONMAN reporting over 2,500 registered athletes from 16 countries and 47 US states set to compete.
Having run for consecutive years, from 2007 to 2019, IRONMAN Louisville in Kentucky was cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2020, with IRONMAN confirming that the full distance event would not return in 2021.
The new event brings the Kentucky venue back to the IRONMAN 70.3 racing circuit. The 70.3 distance race will begin with a 1.2-mile downriver swim in the Ohio River, located near the same location as the original full-distance IRONMAN Louisville event.
Athletes will then transition at the Great Lawn in Waterfront Park, to a scenic 56-mile bike course leaving Louisville along River Rd, and continuing to the rolling hills and countryside of Oldham County.
The 13.1-mile run will take athletes along the Ohio River and through several Louisville parks on the way back to a finish line experience downtown at Fourth Street Live just as the original IRONMAN Louisville event did.
The 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Louisville triathlon offers age group qualifying slots to the 2025 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place on November 8-9, 2025, in Marbella, Spain.
Also at the event, the IRONMAN Foundation will distribute over US$26,500 through grant funding and programming to organizations serving the Louisville community. This takes the foundation’s total historical giveback in the region to over US$800,000.
