Supersapiens, the glucose management system for athletes, has confirmed ‘signficant changes’ for its users as the company ceases the shipment of sensors and terminates all memberships.
In an e-mail to its active members, as reported on by DC Rainmaker, and, in a statement on its website, Supersapiens states that it is in a ‘period of strategic restructuring’. The company adds that it acknowledges the ‘evolving landscape’ in which it operates.
A key challenge that faced the company was that Supersapiens was unable to get approval for its offering in the key markets of North America. It was therefore reliant on its European business, which didn’t equate to sufficient scale.
Over the years, Supersapiens made some strategic partnerships in Europe, such as a sponsorship of the popular Mallorca 312 gran fondo and tie-ups with cycling teams as well as pro triathletes. In January 2023, it showcased its glucose management platform at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. However, approval for the product from the relevant authorities was still a long way off in the USA.
In March 2023, the company also had to contend with a pro cyclist being disqualified for wearing a Supersapiens blood glucose monitor at the Strade Bianche Donne race. This amplified the fact that Supersapiens had yet to obtain approval for use at UCI-sanctioned races.
Supersapiens’ platform was powered by the Abbott Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor – with Supersapiens’ software delivering insights around glucose data. This aimed to help athletes to make more informed nutrition decisions during training and racing.
The Supersapiens ecosystem consisted of the Supersapiens app, Supersapiens Energy Band, and Supersapiens Data Dashboard. For real-time glucose visibility Supersapiens also had integrations with devices from the likes of Wahoo and Garmin.
At this point in time it appears that sadly for all concerned Supersapiens is ceasing operations during its ‘period of strategic restructuring’.
